Dositheus

Dositheus
(1641–1707)
   Patriarch and Theologian.
Dositheus was born in the Peloponnese and, as an orphan, was placed in a monastery at the age of eight.
He was educated in Athens and in 1657 he entered the service of the Patriarch of Jerusalem. In 1661 he was appointed Archdeacon of Jerusalem; he was consecrated Archbishop of Caesarea in 1666 and he became Patriarch of Jerusalem in 1669. He is remembered for his dedicated opposition to Western theology. He presided over the Synod of Jerusalem in 1672 which produced a series of decrees designed to remove all Protestant influence from the Greek Church. He tried to limit the access of the Western religious orders to the Holy Places of Palestine and in 1680 he set up a printing press at Jassy to print books of traditional Greek theology. He set himself to reform the monasteries and the administration of the Greek Church and he sought to extend its influence into the Russian Orthodox Church. A man of tremendous erudition, he was the author of the History of the Patriarchs of Jerusalem, published after his death.
